Can the mystery of life be contained in a petri dish?

If I’d be a true believer in churches and religions, I had to say: „No“, without any explanation or proof. Fortunately, I'm not and have got the opportunity to go further than this. The most important point about the discussion in cloning is to understand the coherence between science and faith.

At first Mystery is a thing which we don't understand. Humans have been fascinated by the unknown all the time. But all the more we start to understand how the mechanisms of life work and this knowledge is spread all over the world, resistance stirs. The evolution theory is just one example for this controversy between science and churches. But furthermore it is the best one, because it affected our own lifetime. Although scientists have discovered new evidences each year, the theory has been removed from educational books in several states of the U.S.. But even Darwin himself didn't renounce the existence of a divinity.

Scientists discover the unknown by scientific work, which includes proofs. They don't argue that the up-to-date theories are a kind of absolute truth about an issue. These theories are just the best explanations and models for natural mechanisms, which are really available. Thus, the next theory could replace the current one. For expample the theory of relativity replaced the theory of luminiferous aether as medium for light in our universe.i

An all knowing God can be an explanation for everything and may provide hope and help people during their lifetime. But neither can science be a surrogate for faith, nor can religion be a replacement for scientific work. Both are essential for a sustainable and responsible exposure with new technologies. Cloning and genetics feature chances for the whole mankind.

If you asked me, if life can be contained in a petri dish, I'll have to answer yes. Because if you accept that knowledge can’t be hold back in the internet generation, you will not ask me what is possible but how to handle the facts. Cloning and genetic manipulation are facts. They may cause fear or discomfort because of the nescience and politics of religious communities. A divinity may help you to accept almost everything, which is still a mystery. Unfortunately cloning and genetics aren’t longer mysteries and without new dark ages it will never be.

The true discussion starts with: Is it ethically correct that we don’t cure almost each fatal disease? Is it right to be (too) paralyzed with fear by the unknown ? Is it right to spread those fears? Don’t we learn everything possible about biotechnologies to find a good way to handle it? Almost everything can be relativized by knowledge.

In addition if you asked me, if mysteries can be contained in a petri dish, I'll have to answer no. There is no way to put nescience in a dish.

Cote d'Ivoire is back!!

Please read the following message I got yesterday and write a response. You might like to get more information, want to give your regards and may be some comfort... do as you like. When you'll have finished - please send it to my account, I'll 'put you through' (so to speak), i. e.

Hello Katrhrin!

Saddened to have released you one moment, it was of for my health, because after draining of the toxic the waste in my country and the activities which we led in the committee of help to the victims, I also underwent the aftereffects of this waste.
I was thus sick during 67 days and as my pupils are all new in the program, they preferred to wait that I recover.
I hope that we lost nothing of this interessant schedule(program) that is ENO.
Thank you for your Understanding.

What is an ecological footprint?

With the earth's population at more than 6 billion, human impact on the earth is causing serious environmental problems. We have studied many of these problems in the ENO Programme. Who is responsible and what can be done to insure a sustainable future for our planet?Scientists have developed a tool for measuring our impact on the environment by studying an individual's daily use of water, transportation, energy, and food, as well as a person's daily garbage production. A mathematical formula is then used to calculate how much land and sea are required by each person to live this way. This measure is called an ecological footprint. In this theme we will calculate our individual eco-footprints in order to see our impact on the earth's systems and resources. We can then compare footprints between countries to see who uses more of the earth to sustain their lifestyle. Once we know our impact, we can begin to find real solutions to environmental problems caused by overuse of the earth's finite resources. These solutions will be things individuals can do at home, work, and school to help conserve the earth and insure a sustainable future.

1. Calculate your ecological footprint

There are many sites in the Internet where you can calculate your egological footprint. Calculate your EF here:

http://ecofoot.org/
How much was it? Write it down to ENO Diary or blog. Note that different EF calculators are not always exactly comparable.

2. Footprint in different countries

Find out more about ecological footprint and its size in different countries:

What schools and management can do

And now you can find the last ppt of our short presentations - here as well as on the ENO-CC blog.
This one is from Michael, Christian, Serdar and Mathias who took our school under search looking for unnecessary CO² sources, the main cause of global warming... .

Results of Climate Change Campaign
There are some interesting results in the form of ppts published in the ENO blog. Have a look at
http://enocc.blogspot.com
Our presentations were filmed and evaluated by the students themselves. There were three ppts. Two of them you can download here.
The first one is about the impact of climate change on the fauna in Germany by Sebastian and Jörn. The second one is about the impact of climate change on our weather by Markus and Nino.

I 'd like to get the ppt of those who investigated the BBS 3's impact on our climate conditions, soon!
All in all I would rate ours as a successful participation - although we didn't get the press or any other media involved and didn't take part in the 'March of the Frogs'. How do you rate our participation? Please give your own comments here.

Have a look of the results other participants published on the blogsite given above (ENO).
Take down some key words and report about one or two contributions you really find interesting. The goal should be to discuss what you found in class.
Have Fun!

Sharing information: Task for 11 DEC

Prepare a presentation in which you give a good introduction to the general topic 'climate change' as well as your specific topic.
Present your results in a way that the audience understand well and can memorize what you found out. It would be good to present pictures, photos, diagrams.
Find a good resumé for your contribution.
